Sabbat Plus is de overkoepelende benaming voor de inhoudelijke middagprogramma’s in de Adventkapel, waar ruimte is voor meer verdieping in een maatschappelijk en/of bijbels onderwerp.
Verdiepende geloofsgesprekken: Een wraakzuchtige God en gewelddadige christenen?
Op sabbat 22 juni willen we graag met elkaar stilstaan bij ons beeld van God. Wie is God echt? Hoe gaan we om met gewelddadige voorstellingen van God? Hoe verzoenen we de toorn van God met Zijn liefde, als deze eigenschappen met elkaar verzoend kunnen worden?
Op basis van het Oude Testament is God beschuldigd van kindermoord, genocide en andere wrede daden. En inderdaad, heel wat van dergelijke activiteiten of goddelijke bevelen worden genoemd in de Bijbel. Marcion, 'de grote ketter uit de tweede eeuw', concludeerde dat de God van het Oude Testament verschilt van de God van het Nieuwe Testament. De scheppende God is volgens hem niet de God van liefde. Marcion creëerde zijn eigen Nieuwe Testament en zuiverde het van verwijzingen en toespelingen op het Oude Testament, waardoor het aanzienlijk werd verkort.
Dit roept ook de vraag op of het Oude Testament ondergeschikt is aan het Nieuwe Testament en wellicht zelfs onchristelijk of immoreel. Bovendien kan het mentale beeld dat we van God hebben niet alleen ons denken beïnvloeden, maar ook ons handelen, net zoals Marcion zijn eigen Nieuw Testamentische canon creëerde. Wat is de relatie tussen onze perceptie van God als een gewelddadig wezen en onze tolerantie en benadering van geweld? Waar past Jezus in dit plaatje?
We nodigen je uit hierover in gesprek te gaan met dr. Ekkehardt Mueller (voorzitter van de ethiekcommissie van de Biblical Research Institute van de Generale Conferentie), omdat het invloed heeft op hoe we ons tot God verhouden en ons leven leiden, en moedigen je aan ook jouw eigen vragen in te brengen.

“A Wrathful God and Violent Christians?”
Based on the Old Testament, God has been accused of infanticide, genocide, and other cruel actions. And indeed, quite a number of such activities or divine orders are reported in Scripture. Marcion, the great heretic of the second century A.D., concluded that the God of the Old Testament is different from the God of the New Testament. The creator God is not the God of love. Marcion created his own New Testament and purged it from references and allusions to the Old Testament thereby shortening it substantially.
This raises a number of questions for us: How do we deal with violent portrayals of God? How do we reconcile the wrath of God with His love, if these traits can be reconciled? Who is God really? This raises also the question whether the Old Testament is inferior to the New Testament and basically unchristian or immoral. Furthermore, the mental picture we have of God may influence not only our thinking but also our actions, just as Marcion created his own New Testament canon. What is the connection between our perception of God as a violent being and our own toleration of and approach to violence? Where does Jesus fit into the picture?
These are some of the questions we will attempt to address and discuss on June 22. Bring also your own questions that are related to this difficult but very important subject, because it influences how we relate to God and live our lives.
